Banjul, the capital of Gambia. It's more like village then a city. We stayed almost a week. When we walked through the streets we were an attraction to most of them. Many search contact: "Hello, how are you? Were are you from? Can I help you?..." And the kids shout "Toubab", means white man. Never mind if you need help or not many people, particulary young man offer their help. Some are more insistent then others.
It's a task to find trusty bikes. With only a minimum of repair equipment (one spare tube and a bag of patches which don't work in the hot african sun ;) we want to make sure that tires are ok, breaks work and at least some gears. Unnecessary to mention that the salesmen wants a exorbitant price for exactly these to bikes we want.
Welding on bigger carriers and a system to transport the surfboard seems like nothing unusual to our friend Ibrahim. Even though he does not know what a surfboard is.
And so we are ready for this next adventure, which even surprised us, how well we got the bikes ready. What a feeling to be back on the road. I knew right from the start that this would be one of the highlights of this trip.
With the ferryboat we leave Banjul. Luckely we could enter after the cars otherwise it would be a fight to push the bikes in.
On the road.
This is the family Faye. They shared their meals with us and let us stay overnigth in one of the rooms. We shared a afternoon of laugther and singing with the kids. Sohna, in the middle with the baby, treated us with all the foods they had around.
There was one 20km stretch unpaved road, that would be no problem at all, but the cars and trucks driving by, blow all the dust in our faces.
And all of a sudden this guy appeared. Not shy at all he proved that adapting to his sourrounding is possible.
Cycling through Africa, we can recommend to everybody. We found mainly tared roads inbetween citys and once outside the urban zone, there is not much traffic to deal with except cows and goats crossing every now and then. And its a great way to get in touch with the locals. This is confirmed by dutchmen Balthazar, who was cycling from Southafrica to Dakar for the last five years!
Back in Dakar we got lucky once more.
The french couple Toma and Sophie with their friend Mael invite us to join them on thier ship. Thursday morning we will leave for the Cap Vert Islands.
They run a project under the name viensvoirlamer.worldpress.com for french school kids.
Our new home for a couple of days. The boat is called Téthys.
Against my first impression, I/we really like blogging. It's a pleasure to share experiences. In addition we would appreciate your feedback, ideas or questions. Either as a comment or straigth to us: mendoza.simon@gmail.com (pataguest@gmail.com)
